Guidelines for Weddings at Prince of Peace

Marriage Service
The Marriage Service is an integral part of our congregation’s ministry and reflects the life and purpose of our community: to worship God, giving God thanks for God’s love for us in Jesus Christ.
The Service Of Marriage is one of the worship services of a Lutheran congregation.  Receiving God’s blessings in the marriage service is a small part of our lifelong walk with Christ.
A pastor of Prince of Peace will preside at weddings held here.  Request for a guest pastor to preside or participate in your wedding will be considered on an individual basis.  In such cases visiting pastors will consult with one of the pastors at Prince of Peace to obtain permission to perform the service consistent with worship practices here, and will observe these wedding  guidelines.
Please contact the church office, 343-3453, as early as possible to get your wedding date on the calendar.

Weddings for New Members
It is church policy to not host weddings for couples without any prior connection to Prince of Peace, but new couples are welcome to consult with a pastor about membership at PoP. Couples who are not currently members are considered ‘members,’ and eligible for weddings at PoP, when one (or both) of the betrothed has held prior membership and/or has relatives who are current members.

Preparation of Marriage
When couples preparing for marriage wish one of the pastors of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church to preside at the wedding, they should plan to meet with the pastor  on 4-6 separate occasions for pre-marital counseling and wedding planning.  Each session will last approximately one hour.  Sessions will focus on the following:
The importance of Christian faith and Christ in the marriage.
Maturity and readiness for marriage.
The spiritual meaning of the Marriage Service.
Specific plans for the order of services, vows, lessons etc.

Candles
We have two candelabras and candles for the ends of the center aisle pews available for your use.  All other candles will be such that the flame is contained i.e. a votive candle or covered with a hurricane. Candles must be dripless. Candles are not permitted in the Baptismal font or on the altar, except the unity candle if one is used.

Marriage License
To ease last-minute pressure before the wedding, we ask that you bring your marriage license to the church office sometime during the week prior to the wedding service.  If this is not possible, the marriage license must be presented to the Wedding Coordinator at the rehearsal.

Music
Though permitting fairly wide discretion, the music selected for use during the services should reflect the steadfast love in Christ as the foundation of and model for marriage, Music must be approved by the pastor or the organist of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

Rehearsal
The rehearsal should be scheduled the day before or two days before the Marriage Service.  This alleviates anxiety on the part of the bride and groom, the pastor, wedding coordinator and organist as they work as a team doing their best to be aware of the needs of the worship service and the couple.

Photographer & Video Taping
In keeping with the worshipful mood and context of a worship service, pictures only by the photographer (no flash) are permitted during the service.  Guests, family and friends are requested not to take pictures during the ceremony (please note this in your wedding bulletin). Persons videotaping or photographing the wedding must speak with the coordinator regarding when and where pictures may be taken before, during and after the wedding ceremony.

Florist
Flowers are permitted in the narthex and the nave area on either side of the altar.  Flowers are not permitted in the baptismal font or on the altar with the exception of a unity candle.
