ELCA Social Statement on Church in Society. Led by Pastor Rachel

ELCA Social Statement on Abortion. Led by Pastor Rachel and Dr. Carly Davis, OB-GYN

The ELCA’s social statement entitled Abortion is grounded in the conviction that “Christians are united in Christ through faith with both the freedom and obligation to engage in serious moral deliberation.” (pg 1) As ELCA social teaching it draws upon this community’s faith tradition that understands God’s life-giving purposes as pressing “beyond the usual ‘pro-life’ versus ‘pro-choice’ language.”

ELCA Social Statement on Abortion, Part 2

Led by Pastor Rachel and Dr. Carly Davis, OB-GYN

Oct. 13 and 20

Topic: Discussions on the ELCA Social Statement "Genetics, Faith and Responsibility"

ELCA Social Statement on Genetics. Led by Laila Poisson

Genetics, Faith and Responsibility addresses our church's teaching to the human power increasingly unleashed today in genetic research and its applications, with all its questions and complexities. In light of God’s sustained and creative work in creation, the statement recognizes these developments as carrying both promise for abundant good and potential for immeasurable harm.

October 13: Everything has DNA -- just because we can edit it, how do we decide we should?

October 20: Our DNA -- knowledge, rights, privacy, and justice

Lead by: Dr. Laila Poisson. Laila holds a PhD in Biostatistics and works at Henry Ford Health System as an Associate Scientist researching the genetics and molecular biology of cancer and neuro-degenerative disease.

Synopsis: The key premise of the social statement is based on the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31). Specifically in all we do, we should "respect and promote the community of life with justice and wisdom." These words were deliberately chosen as a modern translation and we will prayerfully consider them. Discussion will be held in the context of current genetics issues. Basic genetics concepts will be introduced to understand the issues since education and wisdom are a part of the discernment process. The two weeks will be run independently so you are welcome to join the conversation for one or both as you are able.
